The National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States (also known as the 9-11 Commission) is an independent, bipartisan commission created by congressional legislation and the signature of President George W. Bush on November 27 2002.
Chaired by former Republican New Jersey Governor Thomas Kean, the 9-11 Commission consisted of 5 Republicans and 5 Democrats and was "chartered to prepare a full and complete account of the circumstances surrounding the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, including preparedness for and the immediate response to the attacks. The Commission is also mandated to provide recommendations designed to guard against future attacks." The first hearings were held from March 31 to April 1, 2003 in New York City.
The commission's final report was several hundred pages and included extensive interviews and testimony of key government officials. The commission was the last investigation by the federal government into the events of 9/11, with the exception of the NIST report on the collapse of Building 7.
After the publication of its final report, the commission closed on August 21, 2004. |
