3. Biography: Alan Greenspan is an American economist who served as Chairman of the Federal Reserve of the United States from 1987 to 2006. He started his career in 1948 when he accepted a position with the National Industrial Conference Board where he worked for the company until 1953.

In 1954, Greenspan formed Townsend & Greenspan with partner William Townsend. Providing economic consulting services, Greenspan served as President of the company from 1954 to 1974.

In 1967, Greenspan met then President Richard Nixon, becoming the Director of Domestic Policy Research. From 1974 to 1977, Greenspan served under President Gerald Ford as the Chairman of the Council of Economic Advisors. During this period, Greenspan also served as director on the boards of the Mobil Corporation and J.P. Morgan.

In August of 1987, Greenspan was appointed the Federal Reserve chairman by President Ronald Reagan and was reappointed at successive four-year intervals until retiring on January 31, 2006--serving as the second-longest tenure in the position. Economist Ben Bernake is the current U.S. Federal Reserve Chairman.

In 2005, Greenspan was the recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom by George W. Bush and was also awarded the Knight Commander of the British Empire from the UK and the Legion of Honor from France.

In 2007, Greenspan wrote his memoir, entitled The Age of Turbulence: Adventures in a New World. He currently works as a private advisor, providing consulting services to various firms through his company, Greenspan Associates LLC.
