James R. Thompson was Illinois' longest-serving governor, from 1991 to 1997. He was also a member of the 9/11 Commission.
Thompson began his career as an attorney in the Illinois State’s Attorney’s office, then as a U.S. Attorney appointed by President Nixon. During his fourteen years as Governor of Illinois, Thompson was a chairman of multiple commissions and task forces.
After his time as Governor, Thompson rejoined the law firm of Winston & Strawn. He was the chairman and CEO until 2006, when he took his current position of Senior Chairman of the firm.
